Wednesday 21st August saw the fourth instalment of the 2019 Keen2Go Cup.
The Cup was devised as an outlet for members who wanted a more competitive sports session than our standard Active Days, and places a greater emphasis on sportsmanship and learning to win and lose with grace. It is intended to provide a platform for members to challenge themselves and take pride of place in their team, whilst gaining important transferable skills that sport so brilliantly bestows.
This, the penultimate week of the competition, was another closely contested affair fought out over two innings of cricket and a short football match.
The first innings was nip and tuck with guest captain Tom driving Team Rhianna on to set a strong opening score. They looked to be in cruise control as they took some early wickets themselves, but boy did the tail wag. Sam stepped up to the crease with eyes only for the boundary rope and had little trouble finding it. He finally fell after a good spell of bowling from Jamie and Lewis to leave it anyone’s game going into the second innings.
Team Robbie got the prized wicket of Tom with the first ball he faced. He struggled to hide his emotions, but his team didn’t panic. Thomas stepped up and made himself at home; finally going for a spectacular half-century that included some beautifully timed shots. Team Rhianna looked to be in control of the match and well on their way to victory, but the final man was Sam and he again had different ideas.
He dragged his team back into contention with some huge slogs, but it wasn’t enough. He finally fell whilst in touching distance of pulling off an unlikely win. The series score was now 4-2. The comeback was on, but Team Rhianna needed to win the football to take the Cup to the final week of the competition.
And to the final week it went. A brilliant team move cut through the Team Robbie defence before Harry slotted in the winner. 4-3 and all to play for!
The final fixtures will be held on Wednesday 28th August, with the Keen2Go Cup awards presentation taking place at the end of summer BBQ on Friday 30th. Please get in touch for more information.
Thanks to the success of the Keen2Go Cup and the wonderful feedback we have received, we are keen to introduce a similar session to our regular term-time schedule. Please check our main site (www.keen2go.org) for updates.
